September 16-20, 2009
Chaired by: John Gondring
Attendance: 70 total/40 shipmates Highlights: The gig from the TOWERS is in Omaha at Freedom Park. The
article from the Omaha World-Herald newspaper had the headline: A Crew, a Boat
and a Sea of Memories". A decommissioned ship's survivors see how old mates have
weathered the years. Veteran John Gondring of Omaha eyed the vessel with
affection. "It is a relic, but it is a nice relic. It's my relic." In the past,
the group has met in Las Vegas, San Diego and Branson, Missouri but Omaha as one
draw those other cities lack. In Freedom Park, along the Missouri River, the
Captain's gig--from the new decommissioned and sunk TOWERS sits among other
military exhibits. Some of the men had seen the landlocked gig before. During
one trip through Omaha, the Park was locked. That didn't stop former coxswain
K.D. "Snake" Shook of Oklahoma. Snake clilmbed the fence. He found the gig not
quite as spic and span as when he ferried skipper L.D. Cummings around in it.

USS
MEREDITH (DD-434/726/890
Wyndam Hotel
Portland, Maine
Fall 2009
Chaired by: Dick Kutchback
Attendance: 77 total/43 shipmates Highlights: The 2009 Meredith reunion is
now history and another great one it was. The food was superb at the hotel, the
rooms were very nice, and the tours were excellent, including a visit to the
shipyard in Bath. Ray Casey and his Military Reunion Planners did another fine
job.
At the banquet, we honored Limey Warren, our treasurer. As a token of our deep
appreciation and gratitude and in recognition of his hard work and dedication to
the Meredith Association for such a long time, he was presented a nautical wall
clock. Limey was seen leaving the Wyndam Hotel on Sunday with the clock tightly
clutched under his arm. Knowing Limey, he will treasure it always. Earlier this
year, Limey turned over his treasury duties and records to Al Gordon.
As with other reunions, we saw some new faces, some we hadn't seen for a few
years and some old reliables. But we also missed some that we saw almost every
year, especially Charlie Niles who had attended every prior Meredith reunion. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes
to make our reunion a success and there will always be a few snafus (Murphy's
law) but I especially would like to thank Dick Kutchback, Al Gordon, Bob and
Jackie Sifton and the Michigan contingent, Bob Tiller and the Ships Store, Aleta
Walters and Harry Wrede. As we all wished each
other well and said goodbye Saturday night and Sunday morning, we vowed not only
to meet again in Norfolk in 2010 but to each bring another shipmate. We are
shooting for 100 shipmates in Norfolk and we can do it.
