During the 2006 meeting, all officers were unanimously, and with a standing "O", re-elected. Rip Ruopoli "The Bowler" will continue to lead the group as president. Ed Thorne, "The fisherman from New York City" will remain as treasurer. Jim Whalen, "Mr. Business" will continue as Vice President, and Toni Vasquez "Snow White among the dwarfs" remains in the Secretary's chair.
Attendees came from California, New Hampshire, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine. . .and on, and on, and on. . .North, South, East, and West. They toured, shopped, played Bingo (Everyone got  "really cool" prize, and they chowed down on Georgia's best food. . .including 15 pizza's ordered especially for the bingo games. Almost half the reunion crowd watches Paula Dean's television program on the Food Channel, so they just had to visit her Savannah restaurant. Believe it or not, they hired a small bus to take them to her "Food Heaven" for lunch and, to say the least, it was most successful. They loved the place. Before heading home, the membership voted to meet in Washington, D.C. in 2007. . .and everyone immediately filled with anticipation of another "Blast from the past"!!
Then it came time for the big, scrumptious dinner with all hands aboard. This time it was beautifully catered by one of Savannah's finest chefs. Our requested meals, made before our very eyes! Praises for the caterer were heard from all sections of the dining room and, like they say. . ."A good time was had by all."

Even the youngest of the crew are now 80 plus years young. Among the attendees are family members of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice—those killed in action October 24, 1944. Hit an astounding 22 times, powerless and mangled, with 38 dead and 104 injured personnel, the crew sat between her fleet and that of the Japanese in the largest naval battle ever fought—the battle for Leyte Gulf. The crew did the impossible, keeping the Fletcher Class Destroyer (known as “Tin Cans”) afloat through the night. Two days later, the tattered ship and crew were again struggling to stay afloat, this time battling a typhoon.
The crew received a letter of commendation from Secretary of the Navy and awarded 7 battle stars.

Friday was set up as an independent tour day, the hotel has a trolley stop in front of it and “seniors” get a full day pass for two dollars.  That evening we took a harbor dinner cruise which was excellent.
Saturday morning was our annual crew business meeting follow by a raffle.  The crew decided to go to Norfolk in 2008, Milwaukee in 09 and the Pacific Northwest in 2010.  An east, central, west rotation was agreed upon and they are held in September or October depending upon the location.  After a quick lunch, the buses were loaded and we went to visit the USS Preble DDG 88; it was the best!
Saturday evening was the closing banquet, we had a fourteen piece navy band playing big band swing music and they were fabulous.  Our guest speaker was Commander Andrew Fineberg, the commanding officer of the Preble; he gave an excellent talk and we are in his debt.  Sunday was the travel day although many stayed for a few extra days at the special room rate we had negotiated.

In the past, the group has met in Las Vegas, San Diego and Branson, Missouri but Omaha as one draw those other cities lack. In Freedom Park, along the Missouri River, the Captain's gig--from the new decommissioned and sunk TOWERS sits among other military exhibits. Some of the men had seen the landlocked gig before. During one trip through Omaha, the Park was locked. That didn't stop former coxswain K.D. "Snake" Shook of Oklahoma. Snake clilmbed the fence. Tremendous support from Academy Personnel, which included a chaplain, organist and vocalist along with a pre-teen color guard. We then had a "M" Lazy Ranch dinner. A return to the "Old West" with cowboys and Indians, covered wagons and an "authentic chuck wagon dinner". The menu was not only traditional, the portions were traditional. This was followed by a very entertaining "Western Show". The visit concluded with our trip up "Pike's Peak". We took the Cog Railway up 14,110 feet above sea level. Wyndam Hotel

Attendance: 77 total/43 shipmates
Highlights: The 2009 Meredith reunion is now history and another great one it was. The food was superb at the hotel, the rooms were very nice, and the tours were excellent, including a visit to the shipyard in Bath. Ray Casey and his Military Reunion Planners did another fine job.
At the banquet, we honored Limey Warren, our treasurer. As a token of our deep appreciation and gratitude and in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the Meredith Association for such a long time, he was presented a nautical wall clock. Limey was seen leaving the Wyndam Hotel on Sunday with the clock tightly clutched under his arm. Knowing Limey, he will treasure it always. Earlier this year, Limey turned over his treasury duties and records to Al Gordon.
As with other reunions, we saw some new faces, some we hadn't seen for a few years and some old reliables. But we also missed some that we saw almost every year, especially Charlie Niles who had attended every prior Meredith reunion.

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make our reunion a success and there will always be a few snafus (Murphy's law) but I especially would like to thank Dick Kutchback, Al Gordon, Bob and Jackie Sifton and the Michigan contingent, Bob Tiller and the Ships Store, Aleta Walters and Harry Wrede.
As we all wished each other well and said goodbye Saturday night and Sunday morning, we vowed not only to meet again in Norfolk in 2010 but to each bring another shipmate. We are shooting for 100 shipmates in Norfolk and we can do it.
