Fleet Post Office
New York, New York
Saturday 1 January 1955
By: G.L. Riggs, Jr. LTJG USNR
Alongside South Dock, Melville,
in a nest of five we lay,
Moored with standard mooring lines this chilly New Years Day
Two wire ropes are out, too, one
forward and one aft
To keep the cold Rhode Island winds from pulling loose our craft
The United States ship HYMAN (DD
seven thirty two)
Is moored beside the tender (she holds DESDIV one two two)
The Unites States Ship BEATTY is
second ship abeam
In DESDIV One two two we three others does she steam
Destroyer eight five seven is the
third ship in the nest
Her name USS BRISTOL, and she’s good as all the rest
Fourth are we, the PURDY (DD
seven thirty four)
We’ve traveled with the others and in fact a good deal more
Outboard of all the others lies
destroyer escort BLAIR
Her number’s one four seven and she’s all alone out there
The USS YOSEMITE lies ‘tween us
and the dock
Riding tall and silent above her DD flock
Electric power and steam is being
furnished the tender
Whose personnel are busy now with the work requests we send her.
The United States Atlantic Fleet
has units here today
and yard and district craft abound in Narragansett Bay
Above all
of us is SCPA, COMDESLANT, the top extremity
In rank among destroyers and he’s riding the YOSEMITE
